The second major processing activity is census editing. Traditionally, all editing was done by hand. As computers became prevalent, subject matter specialists usually developed edits to make the census results more aesthetic (and sometimes correcting errors), and programmers implemented the specifications. Now, subject matter specialists and programmers work together to obtain a completely edited data set, using combinations of “unknowns” and imputed data, as needed.

The UN Editing Handbook is included here to assist countries in developing contemporary and compatible edits. Sample CSPro edits based on the UN Principles and Recommendations are also included. Samples from countries having finished their 2010 edits are included as models for countries developing their own edits.
